Still learning....

I decided to play a $5 3 table sit and go last night. I started low but caught up to 2nd in chip by the final table. Unfortunately, I made a bad decision right before the bubble.

I was second in chips and I get 67o in the small blind. The chip leader limps in and the big blind calls. The flop is A67. I bet $1000 and the big blind goes all in and the chip leader goes all in.

I go all in when I should've folded!! It may have been ok to call the shorter stack but not the chip leader. He could've had trips and why would I sacrifice my game for a low two pair. The end result is that both of my opponents had A7, top two pair. They split the winnings and I don't cash at all. The sit out player even beat me. Terrible.

Reminder, if I don't like random cards, don't play the small blind.

If someone has enough to knock me out then wonder why they would go all in to beat me.

Get ready to fold any random cards within threat levels of getting knocked.

Stop and think!
Stop and think!
Stop and think!
Stop and think!

As a chip leader, play defense!!

If I have two pair, does someone have trips or a higher two pair?

If I have a straight, does some have a higher straight?

If I don't have a nut flush keep the pot small and wait for the win. Raise but don't sacrifice your chip stack.

If I have a good hand but the board pairs, is there a full house somewhere?

If I have a full house is there a higher full house?

Stop and think!!!!

Take a lesson also from your loss on Saturday. I was chip leader but Paul grinds away and beat me. I saw him check his cards and he fooled me. He had ACE KIND and I went all in with nothing. He also showed me his discipline in folding two pair when I had a set of sixes. I didn't have that discipline when I played last night.

Stop and think!!!!
Stop and think!!!!
Stop and think!!!!

March 23rd Online Poker
Topic: General Poker
I got my hand on the laptop for my first night of poker since Vegas. I was nervous since I hate losing sometimes after playing well over the weekend.

It appears that PokerStars now has a $4 multitable sit and go. I went ahead and gave that a try but for some reason I said I would play more hands this time. I call lots of min blinds only to fold them to a raise or catching nothing on the flop.

I continued to play bad hands including the following which practically killed me out of the game. I played A3o and raised. To make a long story short, I get flushed at the river. What sucks is he called all my raises just since he had middle pair and a flush draw. I had two pair on the river which didn't make things good for me but I was already distracted with phone calls and my kid not going to sleep when he should've. I never played well while having to watch my son. It was no surprise that I lost bad in that one. Here's the hand with the donkey waiting for his flush:

Against my own rules, I decide to play again to make up for my loss. I play an 18 handed $5 sit and go. I played ultra tight in the begining and just shot up to first place when we were down to one table. I was happy during the rought time heads up. The guy kept going all in and I folded each time. He finally calmed down and I slow played KK to take the game.

So I made a little more over my $4 loss. All is good.

Another thing not to do
Topic: Poker Strategy
SqurdNuts was cheap leader most of the tourney then got screwed to a small stack with a number of bad plays. He didn't play defense and we took his chips. I got my favorite hand and he raised small. I call because I have my favorite hand and I can afford the raise.

After the flop we both check plus we tell each other we don't have a queen. The run is an ACE and he bets with my call. Basically, we tell each other that we both have an Ace. The river is a 9 and I check. I feel that I induced him to bet since my checking the river made him feel I didn't have an Ace. When you add up the conversation, it should've told him that I had an ace but my kicker sucks. He bet too large and lost since he played a poor kicker. It's ok not to believe me but he should've kept the pot small since he can't really afford losing any more chips.

The moral of the story is not to play Aces with low kickers. He played a hand that can't catch a flush or a straight. That made it worse. When someone communicates that they also have an Ace then wonder if your kicker is better. I played A10 since it was my lucky hand, and I can make a str8 if I got lucky.

To add to this, I knew he was getting desperate after being on a losing streak. He was on semi-tilt.

What not to do...
Topic: Poker Strategy
I min raised with 1010 and get two callers with the big blind. The big blind is playing very low suited connectors and bets after the flop because he catches something. Out of his 45s he, he pairs his 5. I reraise really big from his $200 to a whopping $1000. What's strange is that he still makes a bet after the turn is a blank. Although it stopped me from raising, wouldn't he wonder why I was in the pot in the first place. I raise preflop and reraised after the flop. Now I'm calling him on the turn. After the river makes a 3rd ace, he still bets. I call of course and my full house with 1010 is stronger than his with 55.

I should've played much better than that but since he led the bet and called my big raise, I played carefully in case. When you think about it though, his betting pattern didn't appear that he had anything stronger than my 1010 nor did it appear he had the last Ace which is highly unlikely. I should've been more aggressive but I was taken back by him calling my large raise.

On his end, I was playing ultra conservative that whole tourney. My raises and reraise should've told him I had something better than his 45s. But I guess he had multiple outs and controlled the betting well. He could've made a full house fives over sevens or runner runner straight. My hats off to him for controlling the pot.

The moral of the story is not to get excited when you 're holding trash. If you don't know how to play trash after the flop then fold it. When trash catches something on the flop, you may not know what to do with it.

Low to meduim suited connectors are like low pairs. You want to get in cheap or for free and hope to flop monster. If you don't fold it!

Vegas Weekend 3/18/06 (Part 2 of 2)
Mood:  a-ok

THE MAIN EVENT!

We get to the Plaza one hour before the 12Am tourney. The buyin is $60 some but with one $30 rebuy so expect to play $100.

I sat down and scoped my opponents. Didn't get much of a read until we started playing. I didn't wear my sunglasses until my second table since I didn't feel there were any hustlers. There was a young Filipina girl to my left and she was analyzing the game pretty good so I didn't try to pick on her. The girl after her was a rookie. After her was a crazy drunk and the rest seem pretty average. On the right side was a loose aggressive player and two spots after him was a guy who liked to play a lot of pots. He played like a limit player. My target would be the weak girl two spots to my left which was perfect. I just needed to make sure the pinay wouldn't play me.

I got a boost in chips early in the game. The drunk and I were heads up but kept yelling out that he had a pair of aces. He raised $200 after the river and I believe I had top pair. I told the table I would call to draw out information. I called and he had nothing. He truly was drunk. I told the table, 'you're welcome!' The pinay girl knew the value of the information and said thanks. Others understood the value in it as well but some didn't so I knew they were weak.

The pinay girl went heads up against the loose aggressive guy on the left. She didn't believe him after he raise a few times and her middle pair held. She was really happy for herself because she got a good read on the guy. I had a feeling it would also be her end if she kept playing that way.

I was on the button once and after everyone folded to me I went all in. The two girls folded their blinds. The funny thing is that if they paid attention, I never looked at my cards. Why would I risk it? If I lost, I would still be in the game since they didn't have much anyway. I may potentially lose my profits but still enough to keep playing. I'll probably do that once a year! They weren't really short stacks or else they would've called in desperation. Since they were average, they probably wouldn't risk there game against the chip leader.

My stack really built up on that table. I knocked out short stack after short stack with a certain level of risk. It was ok since I could afford to lose to them.

For example, there was one caller and I limp in with A10 (my favorite hand), and my target raises and the caller short stack calls. I go all in. She goes into the tank and I want her to fold. She told the pinay she thought I was weak. She called so it was two short allins against my A10. They both show face cards and now I'm yelling for an Ace. I get better than that. I make a straight Ace to 5! Both players end up doing a rebuy.

Once again, I go against two short allins and this time with A8s. I win when my 8 pairs on the flop.

I'm only making these crazy moves since I trust my Ace will hold and plus I can afford to lose to the short stacks.

BTW, the pinay girl gets knocked out going all in with middle pair against two people with over cards. She couldn’t afford to do the play to begin with and gets knocked out.

Here's a beautiful play. I have pocket Aces and there is one early caller. I think hard and make a min raise. I didn't want to scare anyone. I think the big blind folded anyway and the early bettor calls. Then guy makes a middle pairs on the flop. I think it was tens and he goes allin when he didn't have to. He still had some chips. I show my aces and they hold!

To be fair I didn't lose two hands. One time the pinay girl goes all in with the nut flush after I raise with a pair of kings on the river. I happily fold. She remarks good read and ask if I flushed. I said no but asked myself, why am I giving off info?? Shut up Eric!!

Also, one time I got sucked out on the river with a tripped jack versus my flopped king pair. I had plenty of chips still and I knock got them back later when I raised him all in. I think it was a top pair win.

I make the first break and realize I was the chip leader since all the tables had nothing like my stack. I was nervous and happy but realize I had to fight ego and change gears to defend my lead.

I tell the other two leaders at the table I want them to make the final table and they do.

After the break I play defense and get moved to a new table. I was unhappy since I would have to learn the table all over again PLUS I was sitting to the right of the dealer and couldn't see all I the players. In this situation I made a point to awkwardly stretch out to see those players. It's important to look over all the players at the table.

This new table had to chip leaders who looked like hustlers. I avoided them as much as possible. I don't remember many hands after my table and maybe that is why I was a short stack by the time I made the final table.

One time I checked as big blind with the button and small blind calling. Flop comes 774. I raised heavy after they check to me. The button folds and the small blinds thinks it out. He worries that I'm stealing. But if he realizes that an unraised big blind could have anything including a plain 7 or 4, he should fold. He does fold and I rake. Risky move on my part but you have to do it sometimes. The small blind could've have a seven but why didn't he raise? You are either slow playing or you are not. I was willing to pay to find out.

Well the aggressive chip leader in front of me was itching to take my money and steal my blind. This was unfortunate for him. I was a big blind and the other large stack limps in. Aggressive guy raises and I reluctantly fold but also didn't mind since the other large stack was in the pot. The other guy calls to the surprise of the guy who raised. To make the story short, the caller makes a flush with Q9s. The raiser is shocked and he gets crippled. It turns out he had an OK hand but still it told me he was out to get me.

Best play of the night!

I call a raise from mister aggressive and it's just the two of us. For some reason he put on his sunglasses. Flop comes JXX and we both check. Turn is another JACK and he bets 2500. I reraise to 5000 and he tanks to make the call. After the river, he shuffles chips and checks. The guy next to me says he doesn't have shit. I didn't have shit either so I chose not to bet plus if he folds, I won't know what he had. He had trash that never paired. I had KQo. The high card wins the large pot. I get compliments on my raise. First I prove that he was trying to bully me but again people learn that I'll reraise with nothing as well but maybe they won't try to bluff or bully me next time.

That was the best action from that table and we get moved to the final table. I come in with an average stack that starts to dwindle. I get seated to the left of the dealer. I didn't scope out the pinoy with a chip stack on the other side since I couldn't see him. There was a Hispanic guy that led the rest of the night.

My stack was seriously going down with the antes and blinds so high. At one point I only had less than 4 Harrington Ms or rounds. There was a solid player on the other side who would go all in if everyone checks to him. He went all in once again and I look down at 89 diamond suited. I told myself, it was time to go home. I make the call. He shows 1010 and I show the underdog cards. I step up and don't look at the cards. Someone tells me I hit a set and the other guy gets pissed. The leader asks if I did it on a gut feeling. My answer is yes and no. I've read about the strength on suited connectors and decide to roll with it. I didn’t expect the set. I wanted a flush or straight to prove my point. It's a good rake anyway. I become a contender at the table again. Later during the break, the chip leader compliments my call and reconfirms my faith in suited connectors.

I play defense and watch people get knocked out. For every knock out I get money so it's all good.

I get AKo. Early player puts most of his stack in. He can only have AAA or KK with that type of raise. The chip leaders calls and we discuss if I'll call. He is warning me and I decide to fold it. I cross my fingers hoping the guy would get knocked out. He doesn't. The KK holds and the AJ becomes trash. I would've won the side pot but there would be one hell of a chip leader. Good fold MANACSA!

At one point I get AQo but my diamond ace makes the nut flush getting ridding of one player.

So eventually, I become one of the remaining 4 players. Luckily for me we make deal where places 2-3-4 will all get $700 and the winner would get $1000. I play relaxed and realize it was around four'ish. I was tired and hungry and the Calcetas brothers were waiting for me big time. I go all in twice with any KING and get knocked out with K10o. Oh well, I was tired. I kind of regretted that since I should play to win and not to place. I ran out of patience. I was happy to cash out.

So I get $700 and later found out the last three split to $800 each! Damn but it's all good.

It was the best poker I've played in a long time. I got lucky and played strategically. No real complaints. Next time I should make sure to play to the end.

Good stuff. Good stuff.

Vegas Weekend 3/18/06 (Part 1 of 2)
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: General Poker
We hit Vegas after 12AM Saturday. The family goes to sleep and I hang out with my San Diego brothers. We play poker at The Orleans which had a pretty large poker area but it wasn't full at that time.

I bought in $100 at the $1-2 NL game and lost $35 so I walked away. My problem there was fatigue and loss of patience. I tried to bluff a flush to the chip leader which was an obvious mistake. Chip leaders can afford to do anything and he wasn't going to fold the straight he caught on the flop. At least I didn't lose everything.

I then bought $80 in the $3-6 table to pass time. I don't remember what happened there but I lost a bit after one hand. When my buddy decided to leave, I left as well.

I played $20 on a video poker machine lost there as well.

So I lost about one Franklin since I was sleepy and impatient. I shouldn't have been playing if I wasn't committed to waiting for good hands. I believe that is the trick with grinding at rings games. Make sure you have the time and patience.

It was morning already and I wanted to play the cheap $30 Luxor table. I bought coffee and donuts for the family and left for Luxor with the guys. The brothers joined the tourney with me which was good and bad. Good cuz we had fun but bad because we took chips away from each other instead of playing team poker. It was debatable but its poker.

The first hour of this tourney was limit which I hate. I played pretty much nothing and when I was totally down, I got lucky and built my chips up to be a contender. Yes, I built it up during the limit hour. I was surprised myself. I kept asking the dealer if it was NL yet.

I was moved to another table with Oliver and that is when we went at it. He thought it was ok since we were taking each others money instead of giving to others. I don't remember much hands but I beat him with a set of Queens versus his two pair. I don't think he should've been in the pot with Q5 after a raise. He then beat me when we both had paired a 10 on the flop. He had a better kicker which I could tell but the he bet small enough for me to call. He got knocked out eventually and I played defense with my chips until the final table.

I really didn't have much left. I went all in with Q8s which is trash but I made it to 6th and cashed in my very first brick and mortar tourney. It was a $30+3 buy in and I walked with $69. It was better than nothing and I enjoyed the feeling that I made it into the bubble.

Afterwards, I went back to the room and slept for 1-2 hours. I caught up with the family and spent the day with them. Our big winner sister-in-law treated us to buffet and Mandalay Bay. She is always lucky with slots and did well in blackjack. They must think I'm nuts to play poker for hours and come back with next to nothing money.

I met up with the Calcetas brothers again and went to my tourney at the Plaza. I'll describe this in a separate blog entry next time.

Losing Streak
Topic: General Poker
I've been in such a losing streak lately. Ever since I did poorly in the $50 buyin game, it has been downhill. I withdrew the money I had left from Pokerstars to get ready for Vegas this weekend. I left enough cash for 5 $1 sit and goes and never cashed out. I played a free roll FSN game last night only to go on tilt by some players pissing people off at the table. The only time I've won so far was with two play money sit and goes.

How do I win 3 multitable sit and goes last week and do so poorly this week? I know my problem was playing limits I can't afford. I played a $30 and $50 but lost and never cashed in them. I could've played over a dozen $5 games for some good practice if I didn't try for the more expensive games. I could've stretched out the $70 I lost at Hollywood Park and played it online instead.

If I play to get money I lose. I should always play for the sake of playing poker since I do better that way.

Wish me luck in Vegas.

A night at Hollywood Park
Topic: General Poker
I've been losing lately except for a single table play money sit and go. Last night I played at Hollywood Park. It was a sit and go plus a satellite to a big $300 tourney. I was happy with my game but unhappy with my table etiquette.

Why was I happy? I played good cards well and raked to stay in the top three in chips. I had labeled all of my opponents and learned of a new character. Here are my characters starting to my left:

I had an experienced player but a calling station. He called two raises just for an ACE HIGH. He probably thought I didn't have anything which he was right. We chopped a pot when we both an ACE HIGH. I tried to bet as if I tripped QUEENs but he didn't fall for it. I didn't bet enough for him to fold.

There was a loose aggressive player since I saw him show face cards with low kickers. I knocked him out with a set of twos against his flopped pair king but he had a low kicker as well.

I had a conservative player only playing and showing premium hands. He went all in against me preflop while I had AJ and I folded. He was watching me hard. He also raised big after I raised with JJ. I folded then as well. I didn't want to risk my game for JJ.

After that guy was a weak player, not playing very much and limping in a lot. I crippled him after we checked to the turn. I caught a Q for my straight. He raised and I reraised. He called and I won. Wish I bet a little more.

After that guy was an Asian guy with glasses. He was playing quality but eating at the table. I consider that I distracting. He led with chips for a while until he got faked out and got crippled. He bet in a lot. I don't think I ever played a hand against him. Would've been interesting.

After that guy was an older dude getting ticked off about the dealer and the timing. Making him a little tilted and he was eating as well. He played conservative tight but must've been losing his patience.

Then there was guy overly tight and I believe got knocked out the first hand he played with KQo.

Then there was Mr. Hollywood. He acted like he was weak going all in with a set of 10s. He eventually won. He was vocal which I considered loose aggressive but we was actually tight aggressive which does well in poker.

To my right was a guy who almost never played but raked with two pair. He went all in with trash and got knocked out. He shouldn't steal against players that can afford him.

Then there was me, I had poor table etiquette. Playing only makes you forget how to act at a table. I raised incorrectly and didn't even know the value of my chips. I was tight conservative mostly. When I made hands, I didn't raise enough to make good money.

I came in third after calling off my stack. I had KJo versus an AQs. It was three handed, what could I do? I didn't want to get blinded. Play to win.

But I wish I made second since the leader made a deal with the second placer. Oh well...

I played 2-4 hold'em and lost quickly as usual. I need to learn limit games to finance my tourneys or should I just play small tourneys to finance big tourneys? Micro level tourneys take too long to make money. Play 3 hours to win $14?? I guess it will give me mileage?

Hmmmmm...

I'm going to Vegas next weekend. I'm not going to withdraw all week to save some coin.

Good look Eric!

Mostly bad....
Mood:  blue
Topic: General Poker
So I played good and bad in the past 24 hours. Unfortunately, it was mostly bad. I played a $3 tourney and lost. I then played a $5 tourney and cashed. I played a $6 27 player turbo NL and won. I should've stopped there but then I had to play the $50 NL tourney with a 1st place of over $3000. I focused as much as possible but then after changing tables, it went downhill from there. I was a big stack but played really dumb after calling an obvious straight on the turn. Being that close to $3000 was a rush. I was desperate to play more poker to have a bankroll big enough to play the $50 again. It didn't work out. I played on the rings games and lost. I think I played another $5 or $10 tourney and lost. I have different mental modes that I need to identify. When I won earlier, I felt different compared when I started to lose. Maybe when I want to win money, I'll lose. When I want to have fun playing poker, I'll do well.

So, I was up 30% now I'm down 50%. Something like that. Live and learn that I suck at cash games. My freaking full house 7 over 10s lost to quad tens. I kept raising stupidly. That's my own fault. I was just desperate to play the $50 again. So close to thousands!

FOCUS! FOCUS! FOCUS! GREED BAD. POKER GOOD!

Don't play tired....
Mood:  blue
Topic: General Poker
I played before I went to sleep late last night. I played some .10-.20 limit hold'em and didn't do well but I left the table before losing all my money.

I then played a $5 single table game. I was having a hard time with myself and the players. I was tired and lost focus. I made it to 4th place right before the bubble. I was playing stupid and long enough to let my opponents know I was an easy target. I didn't play using my fundamental strategy. Even when I made 2nd in chips, I didn't change gears to keep the stack. I eventually got trapped against a flopped pair Kings vs. my flopped pair 2. That's how bad I was playing.

I'm not in the mood to play at my regular home game tonight if available. Last Friday was traumatic. Although I won and placed high in all the games I played. I didn't like coming home so late. I was totally useless all of Saturday. I need to mow my lawn!!
